From 2017 to 2021, the Tonhalle was completely renovated. Zurich voters had previously rejected the idea of building a new congress center, which would have meant demolishing the building by Haefeli, Moser, Steiger. In doing so, they acknowledged the great architectural heritage worthy of protection.
The Tonhalle was built shortly before the beginning of the 20th century and has undergone numerous changes. Parts of the building were demolished, the Kongresshaus was added, many of the original decorations were removed and the color scheme was reduced and restored several times. However, the two halls have been preserved and the Grosser Tonhalle is still considered one of the best concert halls in the world in terms of acoustics.
A look at the eventful history of the building, four construction phases and their music:
Today, the entire ensemble is a listed building. Thanks to the approval of the Zurich electorate in 2016 for a comprehensive renovation, the Tonhalle now meets the diverse requirements of the present both in front of and behind the stage - and shines in new splendor. The renovation work carried out between 2017 and 2021 has also restored the sound brilliance of the large hall.
Among other things, the refurbishment includes the renovation of the supporting structure, the renewal of the entire building technology and adjustments to fire protection and escape routes.
